Hi, We’re The Witches of East Wick
When prayers that are meant to inspire compassion instead cause suffering…
Each year in New York, thousands of chickens are used in the Kaporos ritual — a traditional atonement practice in which birds are handled and killed in ways that cause significant distress and suffering. Many spend days confined in crates without food, water, or shelter before the ritual takes place.
Our friends at United Poultry Concerns (link) and Tamerlaine Sanctuary (link) have worked tirelessly and respectfully for years to raise awareness about the animal suffering involved, to promote humane alternatives that honor the spiritual intent of the practice, and to rescue survivors.
This year, Barn Sanctuary is grateful to welcome four of those survivors — Daryl, Sukie, Jane, and Alexandria — who will now live safe, joyful lives as beloved residents.
While religious freedom is a deeply important right, compassion should extend to all living beings. Humane alternatives to animal sacrifice — such as using coins and donating them to charity — preserve the spiritual meaning of the ritual while reducing suffering.
At Barn, we hope these new residents inspire reflection on how our actions, traditions, and beliefs can evolve toward greater kindness for every being.
