Hi, We’re The Pigs from North Carolina

In August of 2019, Barn Sanctuary was alerted by the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) to an ongoing cruelty case in Nash County, North Carolina.

HSUS had been alerted because several dogs were observed on the property looking emaciated and malnourished. The property was in terrible condition. All of the animals on site were living in filth and were severely neglected. Some animals had already passed away. HSUS and the Nash County Sheriff’s department were able to rescue several of the animals, but they didn’t have a ramp or the equipment to remove the pigs on site. They needed help so they reached out to Barn Sanctuary.

Dan drove down to North Carolina to team up with HSUS, the local sheriff’s department and a few local animal sanctuaries to remove all of the remaining pigs from the property. It was an exhausting and intense rescue, but we were able to get all of the pigs off the property and into safe forever homes.

Two female pigs had piglets with them: Annette and Kim. When they arrived they received a veterinary exam and blood draws — and we found out that Annette and Kim were pregnant! We later found out that Tyler, one of the other North Carolina pigs was the father.

On our first trip back from North Carolina, we brought only 4 pigs back with us. Another sanctuary was providing temporary foster care to another three of them while we searched for a safe forever home for them. But, a few months later, with no luck finding a home for those three, we drove back to North Carolina to pick up Tyler (we call him Big Papa), Marla and her son, Durden. They became a part of our growing pig family here!

Get to know the North Carolina Pigs:

Durden

Durden is a sweet boy, but very shy. His belly almost touches the ground when he walks; he is stocky and short. He likely has some potbelly in him.

Marla

Marla has limited hearing, and because of that she is very chatty and loud. She is lazy and sweet. She loves to sleep in her pig puddle. She snores so loud but doesn’t wake herself up because of her own hearing issues.

Jared

Jared is sweetheart, slow-growing (smaller side). Very cool cat. Great energy and loves his belly rubs.

Jay

Jay is cordial but stands his ground. He wins best hair competition out of the pigs except for C.J. and Johnny. Jay likes to compete for belly rubs.

Tyler a.k.a. Big Papa

Tyler is an older guy with a little balding. And he is the father of all of Kim and Annette’s piglets! He likes to nap and lay in front of his fan. At first, he was a little nippy and unsure of humans but now he follows us around, seeking attention, back scratches and carrots.

Annette (and babies)

This loving momma can be feisty now and then, but mostly she’s an excellent mother with a calm and light spirit. She likes to chase after Dan when she is in a playful mood.

Kim (and babies)

Kim has pronounced herself Queen of the Pig Palace! Kim runs the pig barn with her piglet minions beside her. Even Jasper, who actually is the top dog in the pig barn, will move out of her way. Don’t mess with this mama and her crew!
