Hi, we’re the Hudson Valley Flock

In August 2019, Barn teamed up with Woodstock Farm Sanctuary to rescue nearly 100 chickens in Hudson Valley, New York.

These birds, nicknamed the Hudson Valley 100, came from a “humane” organic egg farm but were listed on Craigslist as $2 stewing hens because they were considered spent (no longer able to produce enough eggs to be profitable). Though the farmer said that all of the hens were between 2-3 years old, we discovered on-site that most of them only were six months old or younger.

After rescuing nearly 100 birds from the farm, we spent the next six hours at Woodstock Farm Sanctuary doing health checks on every single hen and rooster. Several chickens had visible injuries, and internally things were even more serious. After Barn Sanctuary brought home a dozen of the chickens, we discovered that all twelve were suffering from various health conditions that would require them to be on medications for their entire lives.

In order for an egg farm to qualify as organic, the eggs must come from chickens that are only fed organic feed. However, sometimes these organic chicken feed formulas are missing important soluble vitamins. This can lead to deficiencies that can, in turn, lead to health issues including brittle bones, heart conditions etc.

But thankfully, because of our animal care team’s dedication, the flock is thriving and enjoying their best lives—safe from all harm and with lots of individual care and love.

Learn about each individual in the timeline below and sponsor one of them or the whole flock at the bottom of the page. Your sponsorship will help provide daily care, regular medical checkups, and cover any unexpected emergency care. Please consider sponsoring them to provide them with the care they deserve!
