Goats
Goats are incredibly curious and playful animals, known for their social nature and lively interactions within their herds. Their keen interest in exploring their surroundings and engaging with one another highlights the depth of their personalities and the joy they bring to those fortunate enough to observe them. Given their intelligence and friendly disposition, it is vital that we treat goats with respect and kindness, refraining from using them for human benefit and instead recognizing their inherent value as sentient beings.
Milk Machines
Goats that are used for dairy production have similar lives to cows used for dairy. Goats are kept continually pregnant through repeated artificial insemination so that the goats keep producing milk
A Grim Life For Kids
Like cows, newborn kids are taken from their mothers immediately after being born, so that the milk can be taken for human consumption. Male kids are used for meat, while female kids are put into the same process as their mothers, and are impregnated as soon as possible to produce milk. Goats that are used for meat are typically slaughtered around 3-5 months old.
Used for Their Hair
A large majority of the world’s Cashmere comes from China and Mongolia, kept high in the mountains to promote hair growth. Many goats freeze to death when shorn in the winter months to keep up with demand. Goats handled for Mohair and Cashmere are handled roughly and often have lacerations and injuries stemming from sheering. When production value is lost, all goats go to the slaughterhouse.
Goats to Slaughter
In the U.S., 2.5 million goats were slaughtered in 2023.
