Hi, I’m Emmy

In May of 2019, Barn Sanctuary was contacted about a goat that was having trouble standing at a dairy farm just outside of Lansing. While they were on the property, Dan was told about another goat, Emmy, suffering from similar issues but even more severe. Emmy was extremely underweight and at seven years of age had given birth to five litters in order to produce milk.

When Dan and his brother, Chris, saw Emmy, they realized the severity of her situation. Her body looked like a skeleton. She was having a hard time standing and even lifting her head had become difficult.

Both goats were surrendered and immediately taken to Michigan State University for treatment. Emmy and Hugo were covered in lice and had urine scald. They were loaded with parasites that were contributing to their anemia and made them so weak that it was hard for them to stand to get their food and water—this was ultimately leading to starvation. Emmy’s anemia was so severe she required a blood transfusion. In addition, Emmy and Hugo had contracted limbs that required them to undergo physical therapy during their stay at the hospital.

Two months after treatment Emmy and Hugo were finally able to come home to Barn Sanctuary and continue their journey to a healthy, happy life. Her sweet demeanor and adorable underbite has stolen the hearts of our staff and volunteers.
