Hi, I’m Charles

Charles arrived at Barn Sanctuary in July 2017. He was found in Michigan by a woman who spotted him trying to escape from his owner. She saw the farmer pull out a gun to shoot Charles and ran across a field in her nightgown to save him.

After negotiating with the farmer, she purchased Charles that day in order to save him and took him home that night. She quickly grew attached to him, but caring for him became too difficult, so she called us in hopes of finding him a forever home.

Charles was abused by his first owner, who stabbed him with pitchforks, inhumanely castrated him and treated him poorly. He was very distrusting of the Barn team when we first arrived to pick him up. It took 3 long hours of coaxing him into the trailer before he stepped in. But, when Charles arrived he sprinted across the pasture, excitedly. He has now blossomed into a new cow. He is one of the friendliest, easy-going cows in the herd and loves human affection.
