How to do Thanksgiving Turkey Free

Thanksgiving is the time of year when we gather with family and friends to celebrate our blessings and give thanks for those people and things that make our lives wonderful. At Barn Sanctuary our family of turkey rescues is what we are thankful for. This year we invite you to join us in celebrating the incredible lives of turkeys by leaving them off your plate and trying some more compassionate alternatives instead.

Want to try your hand at some hearty plant-based holiday recipes? Below you will find a list of recipes recommended by our very own volunteer team!

Modify Your Own Favorite Recipes

Have a family recipe that is a staple on your table each year but that contains a number of animal products? Don’t worry! There are plenty of ways to make your favorite dishes cruelty-free with a few simple adjustments.

If it calls for milk: replace any animal milk with soy, almond, cashew, oat, hemp, or pea milk.

If it calls for butter, cheese, sour cream or cream cheese: there are a variety of plant-based alternatives for all of these! Find which brand you like the most and swap. Some examples: Miyoko’s, Violife, Follow Your Heart, Tofutti, Daiya, Chao, and more.

If it calls for egg: depending on the recipe different egg-replacers exist. Just Egg is a liquid egg replacer available at many grocery stores nationwide. However you can often replace eggs with other ingredients. Here is a great resource for egg swaps:

If it calls for meat: Leave it out or replace it with one of the many options. There are plant-based lunch meats and mock meats like Gardein, Beyond Meat and Tofurky. The other alternatives are tofu, tempeh and seitan.

It is easier than ever to go turkey-free on Thanksgiving and every day of the year! Why not give more compassionate traditions a try?
