Volunteers are vital to Barn Sanctuary’s work. From giving tours to socializing with the animals, volunteers help our Animal Care Team immensely, and we are so grateful for everyone who donates their time to care for our rescued residents.
We spoke with Marne, a long time volunteer! Marne has also helped plan and execute some of our biggest events!

How long have you been volunteering at Barn Sanctuary?
Since April 2018
What do you enjoy most about volunteering your time at Barn?
I work a desk job so Barn gives me the chance to work with my hands, but mostly I love spending time with the residents.
What is a memorable moment with a resident(s) from your volunteer experience?
Some of my very best Barn memories are quiet moments snuggling with Blanche in the turkey coop. She’s such a sweet girl, and we’ve spent many a winter afternoon with her on my lap and me telling her stories or just stroking her feathers.

Who is the Barn resident that stole your heart?
This is hard! So many have made an impact on me, but I bottle fed baby DJ on my first volunteer shift, and he’s had my heart ever since.
What has surprised you the most about working with and around farmed animals?
Each of them has their own distinct personality and moods. They’re so much like humans in the way they build relationships with each other and us.
What would you tell someone who is thinking about volunteering with Barn Sanctuary?
Do it. Now. What are you waiting for? This is the most incredible group of people, all working together for the comfort and safety of Barn’s residents.
Which species (cow, pig, chicken, turkey, goat, duck) do you feel most connected with?
Throughout my life I’ve always felt most connected to pigs, but in my time at Barn I’ve enjoyed building relationships with the sheep. You really have to earn the trust of sheep before they open up to you. I’ve enjoyed that journey and feel sheep are the animal reflection of my introverted soul.

What words of encouragement would you give someone who’s thinking about going plant-based?
It may seem overwhelming at first, but it is so worth the effort. Not only do I feel healthier, but it’s a great feeling to look into the eyes of a chicken or cow and know I am not contributing to the exploitation of their kin.
What are some ways people can help Barn Sanctuary and the rescued residents if they cannot volunteer?
Donations are great, but I also think folks can help out by adopting a more compassionate lifestyle and spreading Barn’s message to their friends and family.
