Volunteer Spotlight: Meet Karen!

Posted March 22, 2022 in Volunteer Spotlight

Volunteers are vital to Barn Sanctuary’s work. From cleaning poop, giving tours, to socializing with the animals, volunteers help our Animal Care Team immensely, and we are so grateful for everyone who donates their time to care for our rescued residents.

We spoke with Karen, who started volunteering in August of 2021. We appreciate you, Karen!

Q: What do you enjoy most about volunteering your time at Barn?

A: Having the opportunity to be a small part of such an amazing organization, and meeting and interacting with all the residents, staff, and other volunteers.

Q: What is a memorable moment with a resident(s) from your volunteer experience?

A: One of my first days volunteering, Emmy the Goat insisted on helping with weeding the goat yard and followed me every step of the way, politely demanding pets by leaning up against me.

Q: Who is the Barn resident that stole your heart?

A: They are all so amazing. I feel like I walk away from every shift with a new “favorite”, but I have a soft spot for Charlie, Emmy and Steve – I guess I love the goats!

Q: What has surprised you the most about working with and around farmed animals?

A: They all really do have their own very different, individual personalities. I think meeting the turkeys for the first time was the biggest surprise for me. They’re such beautiful, curious beings.

Q: What would you tell someone who is thinking about volunteering with Barn Sanctuary?

A: It’s hard work, but it’s so rewarding, and the bonus time spent with the residents is the best payoff.

Q: What words of encouragement would you give someone who’s thinking about going plant-based?

A: Start the transition slowly so you don’t feel you’re depriving yourself. It’ll set yourself up for a higher chance of success in the long run.

Q: What are some ways people can help Barn Sanctuary and the rescued residents if they cannot volunteer?

A: I’ve been a big fan of Wish list Wednesdays and sharing that with friends and family who are looking to help. My parents have also donated an old car. People can also sponsor animals they may feel a special connection to or they can become a monthly supporter through Facebook.

Thank you so much for your dedication and service to Barn Sanctuary, Karen!
