Volunteer Spotlight: Meet Jessica

Posted November 2, 2021 in Volunteer Spotlight

Volunteers are vital to Barn Sanctuary’s work. From giving tours to socializing with the animals, volunteers help our Animal Care Team immensely, and we are so grateful for everyone who donates their time to care for our rescued residents.

We spoke with long-time volunteer, Jessica Haze, about her experience and the animals who connected with her the most.

How long have you been volunteering at Barn Sanctuary?

4 years in December

What do you enjoy most about volunteering your time at Barn?

Wintertime, when the animals are cozy in the barn and they require a lot of snuggles and scratchies.

What is a memorable moment with a resident(s) from your volunteer experience?

The sweetness of Joey when he was just a small baby and he came to snuggle with us in the field. I sat cross-legged and he put his little head on my lap for so long- I could have sat for hours with this cutie!

Who is the Barn resident that stole your heart?

My main man, Steve, the king of the goat barn. The center of attention and the getter of 95% of scratchies always.

What has surprised you the most about working with and around farmed animals?

They are all such unique little characters with individual personalities and quirks, exactly like our beloved pets at home!

What would you tell someone who is thinking about volunteering with Barn Sanctuary?

It is the highlight of my week when I get to volunteer. No matter what mood you’re in, or what shape the weather is in, you can’t leave without a smile!

Which species (cow, pig, chicken, turkey, goat, duck) do you feel most connected with?

Goats, they have such cheeky personalities!

What words of encouragement would you give someone who’s thinking about going plant-based?

Do it now and never look back! It’s the best thing I’ve ever done for my health, the animals, and the planet. I only wish I had done it sooner.

We rescue and rehabilitate abused and neglected farmed animals by creating a safe haven where these individuals can recover and thrive.

We envision a world in which farmed animals are seen as individuals and treated with empathy and compassion.
