It’s with a broken heart that we had to say goodbye to Betty the turkey last week. The passing of any of our residents is never easy, but Betty’s will undoubtedly hit us a little harder.
For four years, Betty called Barn Sanctuary home. As a member of the Golden Girls crew, she is survived by her best friend Blanche (the remaining Golden Girl), the rambunctious boys Harry and Ben, and the ridiculous (but loved) little sister Harper.
Betty was a survivor. Over the years, the Animal Care team helped her battle several health issues. And so many times when it looked like she was at the end of the line, she’d prove everyone wrong, making a full recovery and getting back to dust bathing, catching bugs, and nudging her friend Sophia out of the best nesting spots.
Betty changed hearts and minds. During her first of many trips to MSU for treatments, the vets, techs, and students were unsure of how to approach Betty as they’d never worked with a turkey before. It wasn’t long before they greeted her with fondness and joy. She looked like a wild turkey, but when she’d chirp and stand quite still for therapy, her species was painted in a different light for them.
Betty was a road trip warrior who made many long-distance visits to her regular avian vet over the years. She acquired the moniker “Road Trip Betty” as she’d willingly trot into her carrier for each trip, excited to take a drive like a dog going to the park. For her final trip, we opted for her cozy nesting box instead, to be carried like the queen she was. She feasted on her favorite fruit, blueberries, during the drive while her caregivers watched over. In Betty’s final moments, her vet noted the moment her spirit passed, free from pain. While we take solace in believing she’s with her beloved friend Sophia, arguing again about which of them laid the egg and has nesting privileges, our hearts are grieving from her absence.
Our turkey coop is noticeably missing an incredible person who made our days better from her presence. For the days, weeks, and months to come, it’ll be difficult for us not to feel a tug at our hearts when entering the coop. However, we must be reminded of how lucky we are to have had her in our lives and that she will live on as a testament to the gentleness of turkeys. Betty, you will be greatly missed, and we thank you for the memories and love you gave to everyone who met you.
