In June of 2019, Barn Sanctuary was contacted by the Michigan Humane Society about four calves (Whitney, Helen, Caleb and Norman) who had been removed from a property in Wayne County, Michigan due to neglect. All four calves were suffering from pneumonia and ringworm with symptoms of respiratory distress, cough, snotty noses, and diarrhea.

Three of the calves quickly recovered, but Whitney was in rough shape and was rushed to MSU (Michigan State University). The veterinarians were concerned about the potential for permanent lung damage, and we were uncertain if she would survive. While at MSU Whitney’s pneumonia became so severe she needed oxygen and multiple treatments. Thankfully, Whitney made a miraculous recovery! After several weeks at the hospital, she was finally cleared to come to Barn Sanctuary in mid-July, where she would continue to receive care before being transported to her forever home at Iowa Farm Sanctuary (IFS) with the other three calves. But when Whitney arrived at the sanctuary, it was love at first sight for the staff and volunteers. Nobody could resist her beautiful eyes and adorable pink, freckly nose. After conferring with the staff at IFS, it was agreed that Whitney would be staying at Barn Sanctuary.

When Whitney finally recovered and came home to Barn Sanctuary she met her new friend and BFF, Joey. Whitney loves to play with Joey and even the big cows now. She loves attention, and will stick her neck out for scratches, sometimes even demanding it. But she can also be very independent—enjoying naps in the open pasture by herself. Overall, Whitney has a calm, kind and friendly spirit!

Your sponsorship will help provide daily care, regular medical checkups, and cover any unexpected emergency care. Please sponsor Whitney to provide the care she deserves!

Fun Facts About Cows

Cow picnics are real!

Cows are social animals and naturally form large herds. Like people, they make friends and bond to some, while avoiding others.

Super-hearing!

Cattle are able to hear a much wider range of sound frequencies than humans. The environment is full of sounds inaudible to humans but clearly audible to cattle.

Don’t bite, curl!

Cows don’t actually bite grass; they curl their tongue around it. Cows like to graze on rolling land, although they are able to graze anywhere!
