In June of 2017, Barn Sanctuary received a call from “Black Sheep Crossing Animal Sanctuary” in Northern Michigan about two donkey families that were in need of a new home. Their caretakers, being in their 70s, were starting to have a hard time caring for some of their larger animals and asked Barn Sanctuary if they would help find the seven donkeys a new forever home. Knowing it would be hard to get the families rescued together, Barn Sanctuary agreed to take over the care of the seven donkeys. Siggie (aka Sigwalda) arrived with her mother (Virginia), two siblings (Sylvia and Axle), cousin (Mary Pete), and friends Blossom and Beulah. Unfortunately, in December of 2017, Virginia and Sylvia passed away from old age.
Siggie is the older sister of Axle. The two of them are incredibly close and are very often playing and chasing each other around in their yard or pasture. Siggie is probably the most curious of the bunch, often approaching volunteers while they’re working to check out what they’re doing. She is also a huge fan of inner ear scratches and will prove it to you with a big, quivering lip.
