In Spring 2018, Barn Sanctuary was alerted to a hoarding situation in Michigan. Dozens of animals were living in squalor and suffering from extreme neglect. With the help of local law enforcement, we were able to rescue all of the animals from the property. Sandy was among them.
Sandy was being fed marshmallows, granola bars, and cat food—living and sleeping in a cramped barn full of trash and deteriorating equipment. When we found Sandy, she wasn’t able to use her front hooves. They had never been trimmed and she was walking on her front knees. Since arriving at Barn Sanctuary, Sandy’s hooves were trimmed, she was put on a healthy diet, and treated for arthritis. She received acupuncture and laser therapy every two weeks to help improve her mobility. She now uses both front legs with ease!
Sandy is a strong and independent lady. She is older than all the other goat residents, and she prefers to remain apart from the rest of the younger, boisterous herd. She is still very wary of humans. It’s a rare gift for Sandy to let anyone pet or touch her because she is very selective about who she allows close to her. She is calm but assertive when she needs to be.
