In May of 2019, Barn Sanctuary was contacted about a goat that was having trouble standing at a dairy farm just outside of Lansing. While they were on the property, Dan was told about another goat, Emmy, suffering from similar issues but even more severe. Emmy was extremely underweight and at seven years of age had given birth to five litters in order to produce milk. When Dan and brother Chris saw Emmy, they realized the severity of her situation. Her body looked like a skeleton. She was having a hard time standing and even lifting her head had become difficult.

Both goats were surrendered and immediately taken to MSU (Michigan State University) for treatment. Emmy and Hugo were covered in lice and had urine scald. They were loaded with parasites that were contributing to their anemia. The anemia made them so weak that it was hard for them to stand to get their food and water—this was ultimately leading to starvation. Emmy’s anemia was so severe she required a blood transfusion. In addition, Emmy and Hugo had contracted limbs that required them to undergo physical therapy during their stay at the hospital.

In mid-July, Emmy and Hugo were finally able to come home to Barn Sanctuary and continue their journey to a healthy, happy life. They were put on a special diet and Emmy is steadily putting on weight. Her sweet demeanor and adorable underbite has stolen the hearts of our staff and volunteers.

Your sponsorship will help provide daily care, regular medical checkups, and cover any unexpected emergency care. Please sponsor Emmy to provide the care she deserves!

Emmy's Story

December 2022

Emmy is like a brand new goat since arriving at Barn. She loves spending her days outside, grazing on grass and getting pets from everyone who walks by.

April 2020

Emmy is feeling like a new girl!!

It has been a slow process, but she has gained weight and her health and energy has improved. This has allowed her to move in and meet the other goats and sheep in the interspecies barn.

July 2019

Emmy’s first night at her forever home with her pal Hugo. She was finally able to stand on her own and eat fresh grass.

June 2019

Rehab at MSU to gain strength!

May 2019

Emmy’s first exam at MSU.

She had parasites that caused severe anemia requiring a blood transfusion. Emmy’s urine scald was due to sitting in her own urine because she was too weak to get up. Because she was so weak it was difficult for her to get up and get to her food and water—leading to her starvation.
