Cora, (short for Corazon which means ‘heart’ in Spanish), was Barn Sanctuary’s very first rescued resident. She was born on a dairy farm as a free martin, which means she is unable to become pregnant. Cows must become pregnant to produce milk, just like humans. Since Cora was unable to do this, she was seen as useless on the dairy farm, so they decided to auction her at a school fundraiser. A parent bid on Cora until she won her, ultimately saving her from slaughter. She wanted to teach her children that Cora was worth more than what she could be sold or used for. Cora now lives her life happy and free at the sanctuary.
Cora can be a sassy gal, and a little moody and demanding when it comes to meals. She will screech instead of moo when she’s hungry. She is also playful, kind and affectionate. Even though she won’t have any babies of her own, she can be very motherly. She licks, loves and grazes with all the new calves we introduce to the herd, but she will just as easily teach them the tougher herd lessons (like who’s in charge). Cora also loves face and neck scratches and will stretch out her neck to make sure we can reach all her itches.
