In June of 2017, Barn Sanctuary received a call from “Black Sheep Crossing Animal Sanctuary” in Northern Michigan about two donkey families that were in need of a new home. Their caretakers, being in their 70s, were starting to have a hard time caring for some of their larger animals and asked Barn Sanctuary if they would help find the seven donkeys a new forever home. Knowing it would be hard to get the families rescued together, Barn Sanctuary agreed to take over the care of the seven donkeys. Axle arrived with his mother (Virginia), two sisters (Sylvia and Sigwalda aka Siggie), cousin (Mary Pete), and friends Blossom and Beulah. Unfortunately, in December 2017, Virginia and Sylvia passed away from old age.
Axle is the only male donkey in the herd. He is also the youngest of the bunch. He is a very curious and clever fella, and loves horsing around with this sister, Siggie. During the summer, you can find him chasing the other donkeys around the big pasture. Even though he’s still very shy, his heart is easily won over with a good brushing.
